Hello, I have a couple of pairs of 411's that have the old design surrounds (looks like fly paper) and was wondering if it can be replaced with a foam surround like the later versions. Also i have a 413 that has the same issues. Has anyone ever came across a 411 that has the accordian type surround ? I have a pair of them but i suspect a later recone. Thanks for the reply, Roger

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Roger, you can get the later style foam surrounds for both the 411 and 413 from GPA, or have them install them for you. Check your spiders, if they are no longer flat, or are deformed in any way, you're due for a recone. Such has been the case with the older 411s and 413s I've encountered, which all had deformed/worn out spiders. These 2 models are more prone to spider issues than other Altec 15s, due to the increased travel (Xmax).

There were never any stock 411s with accordian surrounds, as they all used a half-roll, the early ones of treated cloth, later of foam. Although it's possible someone installed accordians on the original cones, it's more likely they are recones. Check the cone numbers to determine.
